Celina nets on his debut as Ipswich score five against Sunderland

Ipswich Town gave a Championship debut to Kosovan international winger Bersant Celina and he helped his team to an emphatic 5-2 victory over Sunderland with a goal in the 55th minute.

The other Town scorers were Waghorn (6), Spence (27), McGoldrick (60) and Ward (89).

Jones (10) and McGeady (65) replied for the visitors in a pulsating encounter which Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy described it as a “great” performance by his team.

It made Town the top scorers in the Championship with 19 goals.

He said: “It was great but nothing to do with me I don’t know quite what happened to be quite honest. It was lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We don’t score five do we? I said to the players beforehand when I saw it I just thought Garner, Bersant, McGoldrick and Waghorn would be better than their front four and they all played very well.

“I thought Skusey was terrific and Tom Adeyemi; I was really pleased it was a good performance.

“We could have had more; they blocked it on the line and the keeper has made saves … I thought it was an outstanding attacking performance.

“I try to set teams up to win all the while and to play well … it was nice and it worked tonight for us.”

Sunderland manager Simon Grayson bemoaned his team’s lack of application.

“We gave Ipswich two easy goals and we did not do enough to stop them. Our players have to be organised and then we can play but we have not done that and we are making familiar errors.

“Every time the ball went into the box they looked like they were going to score. It’s hugely disappointing and the performance has been a huge kick in the backside. We tried to make chances to make things happen but the decisions we are making are not working.

“We have got to make sure we do what is required and we have got to do it all collectively.”

Ipswich pressed in the opening five minutes and a cross from the right by Garner in the sixth minute was headed home past the despairing Steele by Waghorn.

The visitors drew level in the 10th minute following a corner which was taken by McGeady and headed home at the near post by Jones.

Town retook the lead in the 27th minute when a corner by Waghorn was headed home by Spence.

Celina put Town further in front in the 55th minute when Garner and Waghorn combined to free up the winger who slotted home from inside the penaty area.

A break by Waghorn down the left hand side in the 60th minute led to him crossing for McGoldrick to scramble the ball home for the fourth goal.

Sunderland came back in the game in the 65th when McGeady found himself free inside the Ipswich penalty area and curled a shot past the Ipswich keeper.

Town made it five in the 89th minute when sublime play by McGoldrick  just outside the penalty area freed up Ward in the penalty area who scored.
