Risbygate Sports Club Tennis News – Men’s Singles Plate Final
Congratulations to Martin Wright who beat Peter Herriott (47 years his senior!) in the final of the Risbygate men’s singles plate competition. The weather was good but conditions trying with severe low sun initially and near pitch darkness by the end. A marathon session saw Peter 7-5, 5-4 up and serving, but he hit a bad patch and Martin took advantage, winning 7 out of next 8 games to go 1-4 up in third set. Peter won the next 2, but Martin triumphed 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Peter congratulated Martin saying, “He played really well, and was steady at the end and went for his shots too.”
Terry Kingham and Pedro Lopes beat Ken Browne and Kevin Yates in the mens’ doubles. Kevin drove all the way up from his new home in Tunbridge Wells to play the match, but in the end the two Ks lost in straight sets to the much stronger pairing of Terry and Pedro.
The mixed and ladies’ are still to be played. John Baker and Fiona Hilder will be playing Tim Dempsey and Juliet Fisher in the mixed, while Penny Turner and Maria Broadbent are taking on Alex Huggins and Bronwyn Keating in the doubles. These both look like they will be good, tight matches.
