Hopes of starting tea parties in Bury St Edmunds for the elderly who are lonely
A Bury St Edmunds woman is planning to start a group in the town for people interested in hosting a tea party in their home once a year to help the elderly who are lonely and need company.
It’s being organised by Marilyn Oakley on behalf of Contact the Elderly which organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties all over the country for small groups of older people aged 75 and over, who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month.Since their first tea party held in 1965, Contact the Elderly has supported more than 100,000 lonely older people.
Marilyn has already recruited four hosts and a driver.
She said: “It is very important to find people over 75 who are isolated and feel lonely and would like to come to a tea party with a carer or friend, hopefully we can provide a driver if necessary.”
