West Suffolk College students clinches work experience with Kylie

A West Suffolk College student has found himself spinning around at the chance of work experience with Kylie Monogue and her stage team next month.

Lucky Orion Nichol, from Sudbury, is currently studying Level 3 Music Technology and has used his grandad’s childhood friendship with Kylie’s tour manager to get the fantastic backstage experience.

“The chance is amazing,” said the excited 17 year old. “You have to take opportunities where you find them. We are told to go to shows and give out our cards and talk to everybody as well as promoting ourselves on social media.

“I have kept my grandad’s friend up to date with my progress on the course and now I have the biggest opportunity I have ever had.”

Orion will be working in London for a week through Kylie’s rehearsals and a show, helping to create the set and work alongside the sound, tech and lighting teams.

He has always been keen on music and has helped work backstage with several small concerts and with college gigs in order to build his experience.

Orion is finishing his Level 3 this year and will be going to the Backstage Academy in Wakefield to take a BA in Live Events Production.

Joe Stocking, course director for Music, Music Tech and Electronic Music said;”This is a brilliant opportunity which has arisen through hard work and perseverance. Orion has developed outstanding stage management and live production skills throughout his time on the Music Technology course, but he also understands the importance of networking and going the extra mile – this is something that we really push all our students to do.  This opportunity will open up further doors to him.”
