Carpet bowlers raise £750 for the My WiSH Charity’s Every Heart Matters appeal

Carpet bowlers have been taking part in an annual competition with money raised from the event going to the Every Heart Matters appeal.

A total of 20 teams signed up for the Cockfield Invitation Charity Fours which was won by a team from Nayland beating their opponents from Kesgave 4-2.

The competition has been running since 1992 and for the second year running over £900 was raised for charity. The money came from entry fees along with refreshments.

There was a full house of 80 players in four groups with five teams in each group competing with the winning groups being Nayland, Hundon, Kesgrave and Badwell Ash.

The semi-finals saw Nayland beat Hundon 4-3 and Kesgrave defeating Badwell Ash by the same score.

And after the competition a presentation of £750 was made to the My WiSH Charity, which is running the appeal, at Cockfield Village Hall.

The campaign is aiming to raise £500,000 for a new cardiac unit at the hospital. The West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is investing £5.2m in developing a state of the art cardiac suite that will provide quicker access to more treatments, but the £500,000 the My WiSH Charity is hoping to raise will lead to the whole unit, which is currently fragmented on different floors, being brought together in one purpose-built centre.

Graham Davey, the chairman of the carpet bowls club, said he suffered a heart attack last year and had to be treated at the West Suffolk Hospital, Papworth Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital, in Hampstead.

The 66-year-old was diagnosed with a cardiac amyloidosis which is a disorder caused by deposits of an abnormal protein in the heart tissue which makes it hard for the heart to work properly.

He said: “I had first class care and treatment from the paramedics and staff at the hospitals so raising money for the appeal was something which was really close to my heart.

“It will help bring all the different sections of the heart department into one unit and it will be great to have it on our doorstep.”
