Summer School project at the Theatre Royal seeks 10 to 13-year-olds for Goodnight Mister Tom cast

Following the success of Our Day Out: The Musical in 2017, the Theatre Royal, in Bury St Edmunds, is running the Summer School project again in 2018 with a brand new professional production of Michelle Magorian’s Goodnight Mister Tom.

The project gives young people an opportunity to work either on stage alongside a professional cast (including Roy Hudd as the grumpy but lovable Mr Tom) or behind the scenes with Theatre Royal’s technical and production teams.

The Summer School runs from Monday, July 30, to Saturday, September 8, encompassing the whole run of the show (Friday, August 24, to Saturday, September 8) and has been opened out to young people aged from nine to 20.

The first stage of auditions have already been held but there is still a need for talented boys and girls aged 10 to 13 years old who can act and sing to play challenging key roles in the production.

William and Zach are evacuated from London to the countryside where they meet Carrie, George and Ginnie, they all go through harrowing experiences but also the joy of forging strong new friendships.

The successful applicants will need to be available from Monday, July 30, right through the summer and including all of the scheduled performances. The next round of auditions will take place on Monday, June 4, from 6.30pm-9pm, if you are interested in applying contact natalie@theatreroyal.org.

The Second World War has just broken out and the life of Tom Oakley (Roy Hudd), an old man in the country, is about to change for the better. Having lived alone for 40 years he reluctantly takes under his wing 10-year-old William, an evacuee from London. As William begins to soften Tom’s seemingly hardened exterior, an unspoken and unbreakable bond is formed.

Tickets are on sale at the Box Office, call 01284 769505, book online at www.theatreroyal.org/shows/goodnight-mr-tom/or visit the theatre in person.
