Crews battle forest fire near Brandon

Fire and rescue crews from across Suffolk and Norfolk are once again in attendance at a fire in the forest just outside Brandon with fifteen appliances called to the incident.

Appliances from Brandon, Methwold, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Thetford, Ixworth, Haverhill, Wickhambrook, Elmswell and Bury St Edmunds were all called to the fire at 5.47am this morning.

The location of the fire is believed to be just to the east of the runway at RAF Lakenheath close to the A1065 Brandon Road.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service commented: “Crews are currently tackling a forest fire in Brandon forest.

“Crews from Suffolk and Norfolk are both at this incident.”

According to a spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, an 80m x 100m area of undergrowth is well alight.

A Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added that firefighters were bringing the fire under control and had it surrounded.

Six crews are still on scene and a water carrier from RAF Lakenheath has been called to assist.

The fire service spokesman said the cause of the blaze is yet to be established.
