LONG TERM ROAD CLOSURE: ELMSWELL – WETHERDEN STARTS TODAY

The well reported road closure between Elmswell and Wetherden started this morning and trafiic is being directed away from the narrow country lanes around the villages to use the A14 see the image above from the council website at https://suffolk.roadworks.org/

The road closure means months of inconvenience for villagers as the Wetherden Road between Elmswell and Wetherden is set to close for more than 2 months

Villagers wishing to travel between Wetherden and Elmswell will potentially suffer weeks of inconvenience when the road will be closed from 4th February 2019 to the 17th February 2019 and February 18th 2019 until the 7th April 2019.

The reason for the closure relates to the house developers Crest Nicholson who will be installing new gravity sewers and manholes. The second closure is related to the installation of new surface water carriers, drains and gullies on the huge development which straddles Wetherden Road and will eventually mean 204 new homes in Elmswell.

Members of the Mid Suffolk District Council planning committee gave approval for the development in Wetherden Road in the summer of 2017 after months of objections from concerned villagers from both villages.

Bus routes affected by Wetherden Road closure.

Sally Lakey from Elmwell reported on local social media the effect of the road closures on the local bus services.

“After contacting Galloways Head Office this morning I have learnt that the 384/385 buses coming from Stowmarket will stop at the Maypole in Wetherden before turning left into Park Road and then proceeding along the old A45 road and then down Warren Lane. The Wetherden road bus stop will be missed out altogether but Cooks road will still be served. The return journey from Bury St Edmunds will involve a turn around “somewhere in Elmswell” when the bus will enter Elmswell and then divert back to the A14, go down the slip road past the Stag cafe and then on to Wetherden turning left into Park road. This is to avoid a two way traffic system along Warren Lane. The bus operators aim to keep to the timetabled times but I am not sure this is possible. Of course this could all change as they will monitor the situation. Hope this information Is useful, Sally”
