Pair of American folk and country scene heading for the Apex

Two leading lights of the American folk and country scene head to Bury St Edmunds later this month.

Influential singer-songwriter Tom Paxton (pictured top) comes to The Apex on April 22, while Gretchen Peters comes with strings attached the day after.

US folk icon, Tom Paxton emerged from the Greenwich Village folk revival scene of the early ’60s.

Although he has remained largely under-appreciated by the mainstream, his exquisitely etched songs have been hits for many others.

His most famous track ‘The Last Thing on My Mind’, is a modern standard, recorded by over 60 artists, including Chris de Burgh, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, The Dubliners, Mary Hopkin, Charley Pride and Dolly Parton.

Tom’s concert features special guests The DonJuans – Don Henry and Jon Vezner.

Collectively, their songs have been covered by the likes of Harry Belafonte, John Mellencamp, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Pete Seeger, Faith Hill and Bob Dylan. … to name but a few!

Gretchen Peters (pictured above) plays with her band and the Southern Fried String Quartet on April 23 as part of The Spring Strings Tour 2019.

Following her two American Music Awards for 2015’s ‘Blackbirds’, Gretchen’s 2018 album ‘Dancing With the Beast’ marked another career high.

Blending shades of country-rock, indie-folk and Southern gothic with Peters’ smoky honeyed voice, it features all-female characters, whose stories vividly illuminate both the personal and political.

Gretchen will be joined by her band, led by long-time musical partner Barry Walsh, and the Southern Fried String Quartet to reprise her headlining set at the 2019 Celtic Connections Festival, Glasgow.
