Man dies in police custody after being arrested in Brandon

A 71-year-old man from the Brandon area has died after he became unwell whilst in police custody.

Following his arrest in connection with an ongoing investigation, the man became unwell a short time after arriving at Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre on Thursday, November 7.

The man was given medical assistance and was then taken to hospital by ambulance but was subsequently pronounced deceased.

A full investigation into the circumstances around the man’s death is underway and a post mortem examination will be held in due course.

As a result of police contact, the matter has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) as is standard procedure.
