Musicians and singers have banded together and raised over £4,000 which has been directed towards helping to care for people with breast cancer.
It’s come from a series of fundraising gigs by Robbie Gladwell and Friends, held at the Quay Theatre, in Sudbury,
Over the past three years the concerts, featuring an array of talented players and vocalists, has resulted in a total of £4,115 being raised and has now been handed over to the My WiSH Charity, which supports the work of the West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds.
The latest one, held on January 24 and 25, attracted full houses with £1,230 collected from the raffles and auctions held on both nights.
The breast cancer unit at the hospital is close to Robbie and his wife Julie’s heart as she was diagnosed with the disease back in 2007.
She was initially treated at the Colchester Hospital and over the years helped to raise thousands of pounds for the complex.
But in 2017 she decided to put all her energy into raising money for My WiSH after being in contact with the team and because the closer proximity of many of their local supporters to the West Suffolk.
Now Julie and husband Robbie, who live in Belchamp Walter, near Sudbury, are planning another event which they are hoping to stage at the town’s St Peter’s Church, on Saturday, June 6.
For Robbie is celebrating his 70th birthday in June and the gig will also raise money for My WiSH and is entitled “The Big Birthday and Very Special Friends Show”.
Julie said: “The two concerts in January were totally full houses and the tickets sold out so quickly and now we’re planning ahead for the special concert for Robbie’s birthday in June. We try and organise these concerts once a year and Robbie spends weeks and weeks and weeks organising the music and orchestrating it.
“The reason I started raising money for the West Suffolk is that I love the My WiSH team and if you live anywhere in the Sudbury area it’s the hospital that most people use and it’s a great little hospital and I have a great rapport with the My WiSH girls.”
Sue Smith, head of fundraising at My WiSH, said: “We cannot thank Robbie and Julie enough, they have done so much for the breast unit who are extremely grateful. The evenings that they put on really do take so much to organise and people are so generous with their time and their talent. We are very excited about Robbie’s birthday concert and urge people to get tickets while they still can as it really will be a fantastic night.”
Robbie is also set to tour with Steve Harley later this year but Julie said the concert at St Peter’s was going to be a “bit special”.
It is at 8pm and tickets can be obtained on 01256 416384 or 07795 387108.
