As part of the celebrations to mark 1000 years since the founding of the Abbey of St Edmund by King Canute, a Facebook Live talk on Sunday, May 24, by local historian and author Dr Francis Young looks at Monastic Bury St Edmunds.
The Abbey of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Edmund was one of the great monasteries of the medieval world.
In this talk Dr Young explores what life was like for the Benedictine monks of medieval Bury St Edmunds – where they came from, what they did, the mistakes they made – and their lasting achievements.
Starting at 7pm, the hour-long talk can be viewed on Bury St Edmunds and Beyond Facebook page at www.facebook.com/burystedmundsandbeyond
Although a number of events to mark the anniversary have been postponed or cancelled because of the current situation with Covid 19, it is hoped that those later in the year can take place based on government advice.
These include several special events and activities around the weekend of St Edmund’s Day, which is celebrated on November 20.
As daylight fades every evening between Thursday and Sunday, November 19 and 22, stunning images and sound are set to be projected onto the historic Abbey buildings for free and follow an illuminated trail through the ruins.
