Brownie pair help to raise money for the Butterfly Appeal

Brownie duo Matilda Mitcham and her friend Maddie Jupp held a book sale in a bid to raise money for a hospital appeal.

The two nine-year-olds, who are both members of the 17th Bury Brownie group, held the event at Hardwick Primary School, which they both attend back in February, and have now handed over the money to the Butterfly Appeal from the sale to the My WiSH Charity, which is running the campaign.

A total of £30 was raised by the girls for the appeal which is aimed at raising £340,000 to build a special garden area for end-of-life patients at the West Suffolk Hospital. The Butterfly Garden will be in a private area away from the wards so patients can spend some of their final days or hours with their loved ones including children and pets.

The girls decided to carry out the book sale to help them gain their Brownies Charity Badge and Matilda, who lives in Jarman Close, Bury St Edmunds, said: “I picked the My Wish Charity’s Butterfly appeal because it will help people to make precious last memories. And we raised more money that we thought we would.”

Her mother Angela said: “They got quite a lot of books in the sale which were donated by their friends. They were hoping to have the stall outside but the weather was against them so they held it in the classroom and they were sold from between £1 and 50p depending on the quality of the books and the author. We thought it was quite a nice appeal to put the money towards.”

Now her daughter has taken up another campaign by knitting blankets for a project aimed at keeping babies warm during their early years.

Sally Daniels, My WiSH appeal manager, said: “It was a pleasure to meet Matilda and Maddie. This appeal will make a difference to so many people and it was wonderful to find that the girls wanted to support it and their local hospital.”
