Still time for businesses to apply for grant support

This month all government grants devised to support businesses through the coronavirus crisis will be closed, but there is still an opportunity for businesses in Babergh and Mid Suffolk to apply.

The Small Business Grant, Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant and Discretionary Grant will all formally close on August 28, the government has confirmed.

The Discretionary Grant still has some funding available and to reach as many businesses as possible, the final round will now be opened up to businesses who can demonstrate a financial loss due to the impact of Covid-19 and have been unable to claim any other grants.

This is in addition to businesses in shared spaces, B&Bs, market traders, Early Years providers and Ofsted registered childminders, RHL businesses with rateable value between £51,000 and £71,000, businesses with rateable value in excess of £71,000, charities who receive business rate relief as well as small and mobile businesses.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are urging all business owners to review the expanded criteria and apply as soon as possible so that they don’t miss their opportunity to claim.

Michael Holt, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for economic growth, said: “We know there are businesses who are eligible for one of the Covid-19 grants, but they still haven’t applied. It is really important that businesses do claim what they are entitled to as it is unlikely that this level of financial support will be available again in the future.”

Gerard Brewster, Mid Suffolk Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economic growth, added: “The Discretionary Grant is now available to a wider range of small and medium sized businesses, so I would urge any business owner who has not qualified for any grants to date, to review the expanded criteria to see if they now qualify, and apply as soon as possible.”

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have worked to contact businesses who are eligible as well as processing the grants as quickly as possible to support businesses impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Applications for the Small Business Grant and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant and Discretionary Grant must be submitted by 9am on Friday, August 28.
