Folk duo Spiers and Boden set to play the Apex next week
Duo Spiers and Boden have made the genre of spontaneous, punky English folk very much their own stomping ground and they are due to appear at the Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, next week.
Loud and proud, they create a multitude of textures with just a few acoustic instruments – Jon Boden sings and plays fiddle and guitar while stamping the beat on a stomp box while John Spiers blends traditional squeezebox styles with his knowledge of contemporary dance music to create an acoustic groove which provides the infectious rhythm.
The two Johns were founding members of the 11-piece big-band folk phenomenon, Bellowhead (winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Best Live Act in 2005, 2007 and 2008).
Jon Boden was named Folk Singer of the Year at 2010 BBC Folk Awards and as Spiers and Boden they have twice won the Folk Award for Best Duo. They have also enjoyed a long-term collaboration with Eliza Carthy as The Rat Catchers, performing on her Nationwide Mercury Prize nominated album “Anglicana”.
The duo returned after a seven-year hiatus with a new album “Fallow Ground”, which went on to reach number three in September 2021’s Official Folk Albums Chart and was a Mojo top 10 folk album of 2021.
They are due at the Apex on Tuesday, June 21, at 7.30pm, see www.theapex.co.uk or ring 01284 758000 for more information or to book tickets.
