Police officers’ condition described as ‘serious but stable’ following crash at Eriswell
Two police officers who sustained serious injuries following a road traffic collision in Eriswell remain in hospital, as an investigation into the incident continues.
At just after 1.20am yesterday morning, Sunday, September 25, the police control room was notified of a two-vehicle collision on the B1112, involving a grey BMW X5 and a white Peugeot 308 marked police car.
Several police units, along with fire, the ambulance service, air ambulance and a volunteer paramedic from Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS), were all in attendance at the incident.
The driver and passenger of the Peugeot 308, two male police officers, were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, by land ambulance, having sustained what were considered at the time to be potentially life-threatening injuries.
The two officers remain in hospital, with their condition now described as serious but stable. The officers and their families are being supported by police colleagues.
Initial enquiries have determined that the police car involved was responding to an emergency call on blue lights. It was not involved in a pursuit.
The driver of the BMW, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving; and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.
He was initially taken to West Suffolk Hospital as a precaution, before being transported to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning and has now been released on bail until Friday, October 21, pending further enquiries.
The B1112 was closed in both directions to allow for an investigation into the circumstances of the incident and recovery of vehicles to take place, reopening at around 6pm yesterday evening.
