A quiz which attracted more than 80 people and held at the Moreton Hall Community Centre, in Bury St Edmunds, has helped to raise nearly £900 for a hospital charity.

The event, held between the Christmas and New Year festivities, attracted a total of 14 teams who each paid £15 to take part.

The family quiz, organised by Steve Baxter, consisted of 90 questions, with six in a team raising £621 which included money from a raffle.

A further £172 was added from an online quiz earlier in the year organised by the 59-year-old with the community centre donating the rest, bringing it up to a total of £895.

The money has been donated to the My WiSH Charity, which supports the work of the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, and Steve, who lives in the town, said he was “thrilled” and “delighted” with the event.

He praised the support and backing he received from Atkins Dellow solicitors and catering business Heavenly Platters along with the community centre for allowing to use their premises.

The quiz was won by the Willett family who put their winnings of £50 towards the funds.

Steve, who is a recovering lymphoma cancer patient and had a bone transplant, said: “I was thrilled and delighted with how it all went, and I was really pleased … it all went really well.”

He said the two sponsors were responsible for donating a wealth of prizes for the raffle saying: “They put most of the prizes up which was very kind of them.”

He said he is now planning to make the quiz an annual event after it had to be cancelled the previous two years because of the Covid pandemic.

And he added: “I’ve just got to find the time to put it all together again. I like to do anything for My WiSH and it’s important to give something back to the hospital who helped me tremendously and looked after me so well. The charity is a wonderful organisation that raises money for the hospital.”

Tanya Fifield, fundraising officer for My WiSH, thanked Steve for his constant support and added: “Steve put a lot of work into this event and it certainly paid off with a fantastic donation. We can’t thank him enough. We would also like to thank everyone who attended the quiz night and the Willett family for donating their winnings back to us. This money really will make a difference.”
