For more than two decades the Elmswell Golf Championship has been held annually at Stowmarket Golf Club. Over these years the village has grown and is now one of the biggest villages in Suffolk. This is also reflected in the number of golfers that live in the village.
The criteria for entry to the competition is that players must live in Elmswell or have played in the competition whilst living in the village previously.
The Championship is a mixed competition and over the years it has had a number of lady winners as well as the gentlemen, it is a very competitive Championship.
The competition this year had 24 players and tradition is that following the golf there is a presentation evening meal in the clubhouse where golfer’s partners are also invited to attend, this year there were 36 for the meal
This year’s trophy winner was John Roberts who won the competition with 38 points on countback from Ian Duncan. John and Ian played together and had and exciting climax on the 18th hole where John hit a great tee shot into the centre of the green to par the hole and ensure that he had a better back 9 score than Ian.
Ironically John and his family moved away from Elmswell last year after living in the village for 20 years but has always been a great supporter of the event.
In 3rd place was Denis Miller with 36 points followed by Mike Topper and Paul Kent with 35. Leading Lady on the day was Irene Overman with 29 points who with husband David organise the event in military precision and provide a glittering array of prizes. Thank you!
