Rosemary Ashe’s tribute to Dora Bryan and Ethel Merman to be staged at fundraising event at Theatre Royal

Suffolk born West End star and Laurence Olivier Award-nominated actress Rosemary Ashe (pictured above) brings an exclusive double bill to Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with her iconic tributes to Dora Bryan with “Adorable Dora” and Ethel Merman with “Call Me Merman”.

It takes place on Sunday, March 3, at 7.30pm, on behalf of the Friends of Theatre Royal who are putting on this fundraising event.

Rosemary will be joined on stage by a piano and a pianist as she performs some of the most well-known skits, songs and jokes from Dora Bryan and Ethel Merman’s rich back catalogue including Merman’s “There’s No Business Like Show Business” and Dora Bryan singing “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)”.

Expect an evening full of fun, music, anecdotes and laughter as she pays tribute to national treasure Dora Bryan with excerpts from “Hello, Dolly!” and  “The Water Gypsies” and musical comedy icon Ethel Merman’s biggest shows, from “Annie Get Your Gun”, to “Girl Crazy”, “Anything Goes”, “Call Me Madam” and “Gypsy”.

Ashe is best known for her performances in “Les Miserables”, “Mary Poppins”, “The Witches of Eastwick” and  “Aspects of Love” and for the creation of the role Carlotta, The Prima Donna, in the original cast of “The Phantom of The Opera”.

In 2023, 16 per cent of Theatre Royal’s annual income needed to be raised through fundraising including events organised by the Friends of the theatre committee.

In 2024 the theatre is facing funding cuts from its local council, this percentage will certainly grow as Theatre Royal aims to keep its ticket prices as low as it possibly can to try to reduce the financial barrier people face when seeing a live performance.
