Cathedral to host service to remember 80-year D-Day landing anniversary

St Edmundsbury Cathedral (pictured above) is planning to host a special Evensong service on Thursday, June 6, at 5.30pm, to mark 80 years since D-Day.

The landing and airborne operations of June 6, 1944, marked the Allied invasion of Normandy during the Second World War and is still the largest seaborne invasion in history.

The Suffolk Service of Commemoration has been organised in partnership with the Royal British Legion who act as the custodians of remembrance.

The service will be attended by veterans and current military personnel from across Suffolk.

The Lord Lieutenant, Lady Clare Euston, and three military representatives will lay wreaths during the service and the Cathedral Choir will sing. The Bishop of Dunwich, The Rt Re Dr Mike Harrison will preach.

Readings will be given throughout the service, including the poignant poem, “Normandy”, by Juno veteran Cyril Crain, which will be read by Royal Marine veteran Tony Hensby.

As a 14-year-old boy, Tony has a clear memory of the sight and sound of the sky being full of airplanes, later learning they were headed to France for D-Day. He later joined the Royal Marines.

A special “Suffolk Remembers” coaster will be given to all who attend the service.

The Very Rev Joe Hawes, the Dean of St Edmundsbury, said, “The Cathedral is honoured to host the D-Day 80 County Commemoration Service. An entire generation gave everything for us to live in freedom and it’s imperative we never forget their sacrifice; those who never came home, those who did, and those who remained to keep us going through conflict.

“The Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 saw bravery and determination that turned the tide of the Second World War. With our service, we honour all those involved.”

In addition to the service the Norman Tower bellringers will join bellringers around the country “Ringing for Peace” – a national initiative.
