Suspended prison sentence for Newmarket man who strangled woman

A 33-year-old man from Newmarket has been given a suspended prison sentence for intentionally strangling and assaulting a woman.

Darryl Breslin, formerly of Engelhard Road, appeared before Ipswich Crown Court (pictured above) on Thursday, August 1, where he was given a 12-month concurrent sentence, suspended for two years.

The offences took place in 2023 and relate to one victim.

Breslin pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing. He was also given a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

Intentional strangulation was made a specific offence in June 2022 as part of the government’s Domestic Abuse Act.

PC Kieran Mendes-Chapman, the investigating officer on the case, said: “Strangulation often indicates violence is escalating and we urge anyone in an abusive relationship to seek help.”
