Queen of the West End coming to The Apex
From “My Fair Lady” and “We Will Rock You” to “Les Miserables” and “Wicked”, in both the West End and on Broadway, Suffolk born Kerry Ellis (pictured above) has starred in musical theatre’s biggest roles, making shows her own and earning her numerous awards.
She has also recorded four studio albums and toured the world, both as a solo artist and with her good friend, Sir Brian May.
Kerry was born in 1979 in Haughley and it’s been quite a journey for the kid who grew up wanting to be a pop star.
Her first stage role, at age nine, was playing a Munchkin in “The Wizard of Oz” at the Wolsey Theatre, in Ipswich.
This autumn, she’ll reflect on how far she’s come in her new, solo show “Queen of the West End, which comes to The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds on October 24.
In 2001, she joined the “My Fair Lady” cast as the understudy for Martine McCutcheon, who was playing Eliza Doolittle.
Martine’s unfortunate illness led to Kerry’s big break; Brian May saw her perform and offered her a part in “We Will Rock You”.
She then starred in “Miss Saigon”, before moving on to “Wicked”, which took her to Broadway.
There’s been a lot more of course, and Kerry will unpack the highlights of her career in her autumn show.
Singing songs from the biggest musicals and telling stories about how she came to play roles, this is a unique opportunity to see and hear the West End’s biggest hits in a very intimate setting.
Kerry Ellis at The Apex on Thursday, October 24, at 7.30pm. See www.theapex.co.uk or ring 01284 758000 for tickets. Or visit The Apex box office in Charter Square Bury St Edmunds.
