Youngsters from Southgate Church’s youth group have spent time at RWSfm 103.3, the local radio station for West Suffolk, to learn about broadcasting and to boost confidence in communicating.
Ten young people from the church’s Liquid Youth Group paid a special visit to the Bury St Edmunds based radio station
The group, made up of students from school years eight to 13, meet weekly during term time for fun, friendship, and fresh experiences — and this time, they got a behind-the-scenes look at local broadcasting.
The visit was hosted by Mark Wilson, RWSfm’s Monday night presenter, who just celebrated his 200th show on the station.
He guided the group through the studio, shared insights into how radio works and gave them a chance to curate their own mini playlist.

As part of the experience, the young visitors selected songs to be played live on air:
  • Sammie and Chloe chose “ETERNITY” by Alex Warren.
  • Daniella and Sofie picked “Back to Friends” by Sombr.
Anna and Rosa also participated in a game of show stoppers with radio host and station manager James Catton; both correctly guessing one song each from their introductions.
The visit wasn’t just about music—it was about giving young people a space to explore new interests, express themselves, and connect with their community.
Liquid Youth Group leader, Kelvin Johnson, said: “It’s so important for our young people to see other people volunteering and giving up their time to bring connection and music to the local community.”

Mr Wilson reflected on the day saying: “It was brilliant to see the excitement on their faces. Radio is all about connection and these young people brought such energy and curiosity. It was the perfect way to make connections with the local community.”
