Northern Soul Live show set for The Apex next month

Edwin Starr’s Band, fronted by Angelo Starr, will be presenting Northern Soul Live, with special guest Lorraine Silver, at The Apex on June 15.

His original band, The Team backed Edwin on all his shows until his untimely death in 2003. Their reputation for outstanding live performances and their intimate relationship with soul music led to gigs with The Temptations, Ben E. King and The Four Tops. Now the band will hit the road again, with Edwin’s brother Angelo as lead vocalist.

Angelo Starr first played guitar in The Team during the 1990s, and then continued with them as musical director. After Edwin’s death, it was decided that Angelo would front the band, being respectful to his brother’s memory in every way.

Lorraine Silver recorded ‘Lost Summer Love’ when she was just 13 years old in 1965. Without her knowledge, Northern Soul DJ Russ Winstanley turned the single into an iconic track at the legendary Wigan Casino in the 1970s.

Due to public demand, the single was re-released on the Casino Classics label and sold in excess of 30,000 copies. The track was listed in Blues & Soul Magazine (in 1987) as one of the top 10 Northern Soul records of all time. Which is the first Lorraine knew of her single’s underground success!

Lost Summer Love’ is still a much-loved record on the Northern Soul and Scooter scene and is featured on numerous download and CD compilations.

In 2004, Lorraine recorded an album of Northern Soul anthems ‘The Northern Soul Sessions’ which still sells well on download under the new title ‘Northern Soul Diva’.

Now, 53 years after her first single, Lorraine has cut a brand new song ‘Standing at the Intersection’,  which was written especially for her after record producer Ian Levine saw her performance at the recent ‘Northern Soul Survivors Weekend’, attended by 8000 Northern Soul fans.

Northern Soul Live is a Soul and Motown Party, paying tribute to the legacy of Edwin Starr and artists such as Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson.

It will include all of Edwin Starr’s hits: ‘War (What Is It Good For)’ ‘S.O.S’, ‘25 Miles’, ‘(Eye To Eye) Contact’ and ‘H.A.P.P.Y Radio’. The band will also play Motown classics, such as ‘Get Ready’, ‘Higher & Higher’, ‘Superstition’, ‘Dancing In The Street’, ‘Let’s Stay Together’, ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘My Girl’.

Lorraine will sing Northern Soul tracks, including ‘Lost Summer Love’, ‘Landslide’, ‘Long After Tonight Is All Over’ and ‘The Happy Faces’.
