Man jailed following burglary of church cafe and food bank

A 46-year-old man has been jailed for seven months for burglary.

Michael McCulloch, of London Road, Brandon, appeared before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday, April 7, where he pleaded guilty to one count of burglary and one count of attempted burglary.

It follows an incident on Sunday, March 28, this year when a church café on London Road was broken into. Items stolen were a safe containing cash of around £300, £70 vouchers and groceries from the food bank.

The incident was captured on CCTV and, following enquiries, a man matching the appearance of the suspect was identified as the suspect of an attempted burglary last Friday, April 2, at Martin’s Furnishers, High Street, in Mildenhall.

CCTV captured him attempting to gain access to the property using a crow bar, as well as attempting to gain access to a parked vehicle outside.

McCulloch was arrested on Tuesday, April 6, in connection with both incidents and was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning, where he was subsequently charged.

He was sentenced to 32 weeks’ imprisonment and ordered to pay £375 in compensation.

A second suspect, a man in his 40s, was also arrested by police in connection with the Brandon burglary.  He has been released under investigation whilst enquires continue.
