A support service that provides key counselling and therapeutic services to those affected by sexual abuse has won an award from the High Sheriff of Suffolk.
The award was presented to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), called The Ferns, for an outstanding service to the community in Suffolk during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It was given by the High Sheriff Edward Creasy and his wife Penny when they visited the SARC on Tuesday, July 13, to learn more about what the service provides.
Louise Elmy, manager of the SARC, said: “The Ferns and it’s staff have, like everyone, been impacted by the pandemic, so we have responded by adjusting how we support individuals who report sexual violence. The whole team have worked exceptionally hard to maintain the service to both existing and new clients in what have been extremely challenging times over the past 18 months.  I am extremely proud to say we accommodated every referral we received. This award is testimony to all the hard work, professionalism, compassion and empathy the team have shown over the past year and a half so it is a great achievement.”
Police and Crime Commissioner Tim Passmore said: “I am absolutely delighted that the great work of the staff at the Ferns Sexual Abuse Referral Centre has been acknowledged in this prestigious High Sheriff’s award.
“I have seen the work of the SARC at first hand and I know the commitment and professionalism of those working at the centre is exemplary. They work in very difficult circumstances supporting victims of sexual assault, including children, and to hear that they have continued this important work through the pandemic without any loss of service is extraordinary. I’d like to add my thanks and appreciation to everyone involved.”
