Pupils’ environmental drive earns prestigious award
A primary school’s commitment to environmental issues has been praised after it was awarded a prestigious award.
Staff and pupils at Wells Hall Primary School are celebrating after receiving the Eco-Schools Green Flag award with Distinction.
School eco-co-ordinator Davina Gomersall, who led the application, said the national award was testimony to the school’s eco-committee of pupils.
She explained: “We are delighted to have been awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag award. Our members of the eco-committee have all worked so hard and shown such dedication.
“We felt it was so important to make a difference at this young age so they can go on and make a big difference in the future.”
After agreeing an action plan, pupils took part in litter picking and Earth Hour, recycled more than 10,000 batteries and collected just under 2,000 crisp packets for recycling for the Crisp Packet Project.
Various awareness displays were also designed around the school and artwork was also exhibited at the Suffolk Show.
The school also gave every pupil sunflower seeds while the 14 members of the eco-committee, from Year 2 through to Year 6, kept a regular audit of environmental measures within the school.
In awarding Wells Hall the Green Flag status, the Eco-Schools described the application as “terrific”, adding: “It’s very impressive that you have formed such a large Eco-Committee. It shows that young people in your school are aware of environmental issues and committed to being active and creating positive change.
“This knowledge and attitude has provided your school with excellent foundations for the many successes that you’ve achieved this year.”
