A year-long partnership between students at Newmarket Academy and RAF Mildenhall has been hailed a success.

The International Youth Programme, run at both Newmarket and the USAF base, has seen a number of joint initiatives including a Women in Stem event and hosting an art exhibition at the National Racehorse Museum.

Joining together for various sporting events, learning more about the American airbase and a Thanksgiving event at RAF Mildenhall, where pupils joined together to cook parts of the traditional meal, have been other highlights.

Headteacher Martin Witter said: “The school is always looking at ways to enhance the curriculum beyond the classroom.

“We are delighted with the work of the International Youth Programme at the school and we would like to thank our counterparts at RAF Mildenhall for all their support and partnership working.”

Earlier this month, student leaders from Newmarket’ International Youth Programme visited the USAF base to learn about the importance of effective communication and confidence building when it comes to leadership.

Year 7 student Alice Griggs said: “This was a very unique experience, which I feel very lucky to have attended. It was a wonderful trip, which I would love to go on again and I know everyone appreciated it.”
