Johnny Hates Jazz to play at The Apex next month
With their soulful vocals, breezy melodies and evocative songwriting, Johnny Hates Jazz (pictured above) captured the magic of 1980’s sophisticated pop.
They achieved prominence with a string of hits, most notably “Shattered Dreams”, which reached the top five in the UK charts and mainland Europe, and No.2 in Japan, and they are to appear at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, next month.
This was followed by global success with the anti-war anthem “I Don’t Want To Be A Hero”, “Turn Back The Clock” (featuring Kim Wilde), “Heart Of Gold”, and “Don’t Say It’s Love”.
In 1988, “Shattered Dreams” reached No.2 on the US Billboard chart and topped the US Adult Contemporary chart.
That same year, the album “Turn Back The Clock” entered the UK charts at No.1, selling over four million copies and achieving triple-platinum status.
Johnny Hates Jazz parted ways at the height of their success, however, after many years of pursuing individual projects.
Clark Datchler (songwriting, vocals and keyboards) and Mike Nocito (production and guitars) decided to reunite in 2010.
The title track of their 2013 album “Magnetized” became a radio hit in the UK and the album track “Release You”, which was never released as a single, has become one of their most-streamed songs.
In 2018, the band released a 30th Anniversary edition of “Turn Back The Clock”, which included brand new acoustic versions of every song on the album.
In addition, Clark co-wrote many songs for the Mike and The Mechanics albums “Let Me Fly” and “Out Of The Blue”.
In 2020, they released their album “Wide Awake”. Over two years in the making, it saw Clark and Mike, inspired by their musical roots growing up in the 1970’s, and is a mixture of soulful melodies, uplifting lyrics and positive energy.
Now, for the first time in 36 years, Johnny Hates Jazz are embarking on their first ever headline tour, with a brand-new show and are at The Apex on Thursday, October 17, at 7.30pm.
