Four people sentenced after stabbing and assault incidents in Newmarket in April

Four people have been sentenced in relation to incidents in Newmarket, in April this year, including a serious assault in which a man was stabbed.

Police were called at 5.53pm, on Wednesday, April 10, to reports of an incident within the car park at Market Square, The Rookery, in the town.

A man, aged in his 20s, was approached and attacked..

The victim sustained serious stab wound injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

A further connected incident took place on April 8, in All Saints, Newmarket.

Following the incidents six people were arrested with four people subsequently charged.

Sonnie Bishop Browne (pictured above), 21, of Dick Perryman Court, Newmarket, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to wounding with intent and possession of a knife in a public place in relation to the incident on April 10. He was sentenced to three years in prison.

All four defendants were sentenced on Friday, November 22.

Georgie Bishop, 19, of Dick Perryman Court, Newmarket, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to possession of an offensive weapon in a public place in relation to the April 10 incident. He was given an 18-month community order to include a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement and ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

Alisha Gentle, 19, of Exning Road, Newmarket, pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to battery in relation to the incident on April 8. She was sentenced to a 12-month community order to include a 10-day rehabilitation activity requirement and ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

Nicole Bishop, 46, of Dick Perryman Court, Newmarket, also pleaded guilty to battery in relation to the April 8 incident and was sentenced to an 18-month community order to include a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

Following the sentencing PC Oliver Canfer said: “These two connected incidents nearly had tragic consequences with the victim of the stabbing very fortunate to have survived.

“This was a nasty incident which occurred during daylight within a busy town centre, where there were members of the public present.

“The victim sustained injuries that needed immediate medical attention and he is still recovering physically and mentally from what has happened.

“The individuals sentenced showed a lack of control or compassion for other human beings.

“I would like to thank all those involved in the case, in particular witnesses who gave evidence to ensure the cowardly acts of a few would not go unpunished.

“The sentencing is a positive outcome for all involved.

“This behaviour will not be accepted and we will do all in our power to catch and prosecute those responsible.”
