Bournemouth struck a stunning 95th minute winner through substitute Dango Ouattara to secure a 2-1 victory over Ipswich who led up until three minutes from time through a first half strike from Conor Chaplin.
It was a devastating defeat for the Town who were in front up until Enes Unal’s stooping header was turned into his own net by Cameron Burgess for the equaliser in the 87th minute
Bournemouth’s substitutes played a massive role in securing victory for The Cherries and it left Ipswich, who are still searching for their first home victory of the season in 18th place and on nine points, four away from Palace who drew 2-2 with Manchester City yesterday and a further five from Leicester who also drew 2-2 with Brighton this afternoon and Everton whose game against Liverpool yesterday was posponed because of the bad weather.
A great passing movement between Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Milos Kerkez in the eighth minute resulted in a fierce cross into the Ipswich six yard area which narrowly avoided Marcus Tavernier at the back post who was a whisker away from a tap-in.
Then Sam Szmodics had a couple of chances.
First when Liam Delap bundled his way up the right hand side and tried to slide a pass up the line for Szmodics to chase but The Cherriers goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalage was quick off his line to collect the ball.
And Chaplin played a searching pass into the penalty box with the ball just taken off the toes of Szmodics for a corner,
From the resultant set play Hutchinson’s teasing cross from the right was met by the head of Cameron Burgess but his effort just grazed the roof of the net.
But Ipswich took a deserved lead in the 21st minute through Chaplin.
It came via a Davis long throw. Burgess won the first aerial duel and Dara O’Shea challenged in the air with the ball falling loose for Burgess. After shaping to shoot on the angle he provided a superb cut-back and Chaplin was there to provide a first time finish from the heart of the box for his first Premier League goal.
Town were dominating proceedings and another corner resulted in Kepa punching the ball away unconventionally and Jack Taylor’s shot took a deflection off Bournemouth skipper Adam Smith.
It was all action as Szmodics’ corner was headed in at the far post by Burgess over Kepa and Portman Road erupted but referee Michael Salisbury blew up for a foul as Delap had been wrestling Kepa on the line.
Half an hour into the game Sam Morsy and O’Shea got in a muddle at the back. Justin Kluivert toed the ball away and Marcus Tavernier’s low shot came off the inside of the post.
Morsy turned and slipped and was dispossessed in midfield with Bournemouth breaking at speed. Kluivert played a quick exchange of passes with Francisco Evanilson and then charged into the box but Burgess produced an outstanding slide tackle just as the visitor’s striker looked to pull the trigger.
With time running out before the break Burgess floated a free-kick forwards which Delap won with a towering knock down and Szmodics’ first time shot was stopped down low by Kepa.
Lewis Cook was wonderfully placed on the edge of the Ipswich penalty area after he received a pin point pass from Kluivert but his first time shot was lashed wide of the right hand post.
Bournemouth were having the lion’s share of possession and making a greater threat on the Town’s goal as the second half progressed with a series of half chances being spurned.
Their manager Andoni Iraola was the first to make changes after 63 minutes bringing on Dango Ouattara and Enes Unal for Kluivert and Smith with Unal heading just over the Ipswich bar following a cross into the Town box from Dean Huijjen.
Szmodics came close to increasing Town’ s lead when he received a pass from Delap and fired at goal but Kepa was there to deflect the ball out and just out of the reach of Delap.
The visitors then made two further changes introducing David Brooks and Philip Billing on 75 minutes in place of Tavernier and Evanilson as they went searching for an equaliser.
And they came close to making it 1-1 three minutes later when Antoine Semenyo’s well struck shot was beaten away by Town goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
Jack Clarke and Ali Al-Hamadi came on to replace Szmodics and Delap in the 81st minute as the majority of the 29,180 fans in the stadium rose to cheer on the Town and Chaplin’s snap shot just went wide of Kepa’s left hand post.
James Hill came on in place of Ryan Christie for Bournemouth in the 86th minute and they equalised almost immediately through an own goal by Burgess.
Semenyo clipped an angled effort over the on rushing Muric and Unal stooped to get his head on the ball at the far post and it went in off the unfortunate Town defender.
The referee booked Brooks just before Ipswich made two further substitutions bringing on Jens Cajuste and Wes Burns for Taylor and Hutchinson.
But in the fifth minute of added time Ouatarra pinched the winning goal ramming the ball into the back of the net following crisp interplay by Brooks, Billing and Semenyo.
