Geese missing on the green at Beyton

The regular sight of geese on the village green at Beyton is missing.

They have become a much loved focal point of the community but they have now been “safely housed” locally as a result of the potential threat of bird flu.

A statement from Beyton Parish Council said that they “have been safely housed within the village following the implementation of the latest rules from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).”

It went on to add: “All kept birds in Suffolk, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, and the City of Kingston Upon Hull must be housed following a decision by ministers after advice from the United Kingdom’s chief veterinary officer.

“These measures are in response to the escalating local risk and number of cases of bird flu in the area.”

It is not yet known how long the geese will be absent from the village green but they are not likely to return until the threat of the disease spreading or affecting the birds is lifted.
