£7,000 presented to fire service towards smoke alarms in homes

Peter Andrews, Mid Suffolk Rotary’s lead who is responsible for the Smoke Alarms Project, has presented Jon Lacey, chief fire officer of the Suffolk Fire Service, with a cheque for £7,000 towards providing more smoke alarms for vulnerable householders in the county (pictured above).

Mr Andrews said that the club’s association with the fire service stretches over 10 years.

Other Rotary Clubs have joined Mid Suffolk’s efforts for the past years and in that time together contributed £97,000 with the help of Rotary’s Foundation District grant.

The cheque for the most recent donation, however, was provided by the Suffolk Community Foundation arranging two funding streams with the Lovewell Blake Grant-making Programme who provided £5,000 and the David and Jill Simpson Grant-making Programme £2,000. The club is very grateful for their participation in the project.

Mr Lacey in his address to the club stated how important smoke alarms were in the prevention of potential tragedies that the partnership of (in particular the Mid Suffolk club) with the Fire and Rescue Service was very important part of the equation.

Mid Suffolk Rotary’s inception of the scheme had led to a long-term relationship with Rotary.

After the presentation club members were shown round the control room of the new Suffolk Fire & Rescue control centre and while there two emergency calls came in.
