Town back to winning ways with 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Portman Road
Ipswich got back to winning ways against West Bromwich Albion today (Saturday, October 25) thanks to the fifth goal of the season from Jack Clarke.
He came on in the 76th minute along with Ivan Azon and Jens Cajuste and the trio were responsible for finally breaking through The Baggies rearguard to earn the Town a much deserved and much needed 1-0 victory.
There were some fans who were fearing the worse after the 3-0 midweek upset defeat at the hands of Charlton but persistent Ipswich pressure finally paid off seven minutes after the trio replaced George Hirst, Jaden Philogene and Jack Taylor.
Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths passed the ball out to skipper Alex Mowatt who was robbed by Cajuste who found Azon and his effort was parried out to Clarke by Griffiths and the goalscorer fired high into the West Brom net.
It brought to an end the Town’s two-match losing run while West Brom created very little throughout the game.
There were a host of chances for Ipswich as they dominated the game, especially in the first half, but the visitor’s held firm until late on.
It moved the Town up to 12th place, three points off the top six with a game in hand on all those above.
It’s now on to London next week to take on QPR at Loftus Road and Town manager said his players “stuck together” and “stuck to their jobs” in a “tough game”.
He said: “It’s a really good win for the group, really happy for the players and for the staff.
“It was a tough game as well.
“We knew it would be played in a really difficult atmosphere, the players stuck together, stuck to their jobs.
“When we did play our football in the first half we put some really good moves together, didn’t get the reward but a lot of what we spoke about over the last couple of days was not getting desperate when we don’t score early, managing the game better, managing emotions better, not getting frustrated, not forcing the issue, not opening ourselves up too early knowing that if we don’t get the early rewards, which we could have done, that if we stay stable, if we stay concentrated, if we stay together then we have the quality to win the game late, the fitness to win the game late and if we can’t with the starters then we have good subs to come on and do it.”
