A14 closure to result in long diversion for motorists

Motorists are facing a long diversion as plans have been unveiled to carry out maintenance work on the A14 between Bury St Edmunds and Needham Market next week.

The dual carriageway leading westwards is set to be shut for four nights between junctions 47 and 44 from Monday, November 17, between 8pm and 6am each night.

It will result in a long diversion via the A140 towards Scole and then along the A143 past Stanton, Ixworth and through Great Barton towards the A14 at Bury St Edmunds (see map above).

These closures are being co-ordinated with the ongoing works between junctions 51 and 50.

Local traffic joining at junction 50 and heading west on the A14 will be diverted at junction 47, then directed back eastbound to junction 51 to rejoin the existing diversion route.

To carry out the work the A14 between junctions 47 and 44 and divert traffic as follows:

  • At Junction 47, exit the A14 and rejoin the eastbound carriageway.
  • At junction 51, take the slip road exit leading to Beacon Hill Interchange.
  • At Beacon Hill Interchange, take the first exit onto the A140.
  • Continue on the A140 towards Scole and at the third roundabout, take the first exit onto the A143.
  • Continue on the A143 and follow it round to St Saviours Interchange.
  • At St Saviours Interchange, take the fifth exit to rejoin the A14.
