Town fans confidence of victory at Oxford dented with 2-1 defeat

Up to fifth place prior to the game against Oxford and now out of the top six and down to eighth after today’s (Saturday, November 29) Championship’s games.

That’s the league which never fails to disappoint … that is unless you’re an Ipswich Town fan.

The Ipswich supporters were confident of collecting the three points which would have put them in second spot.

But such is the nature and competitiveness of this division that even teams near the bottom can come away with a victory against all the odds.

And that’s what happened at the Kassam Stadium with lowly Oxford beating the high flying Tractor Boys 2-1.

Substitute Przemyslaw Placheta’s solo goal gave the U’s the win and dragged them out of the relegation zone.

He latched onto Brian de Keersmaecker’s pinpoint ball over the top and an excellent first touch took him clear and he slotted the ball past Christian Walton.

Leif Davis had earlier levelled for Ipswich after the break with an expertly taken volley from the edge of the box straight from a corner by Marcelino Nunez.

In the first half Azor Matusiwa’s loose pass gifted Oxford an opener as Mark Harris ran on to the ball and stroked in his first goal of the season after Walton had saved his initial effort.

But Town should have won this game as the stats show.

The had 72 per cent possession, 17 shots with seven on target.

Meanwhile, Oxford had 13 shots with eight on target.

A familiar scenario from previous games this season which manager Kieran McKenna needs to address to ensure the Town gain promotion back to the Premier League.

After a slow start to the campaign this was the Town’s first defeat since October 21 and the next couple of weeks could be pivotal in defining the Tractor Boys’ season.
