‘Bury St Edmunds New Act of the Year’ launched at Abbeygate Cinema

The Abbeygate Cinema, in Bury St Edmunds, is organising a special event to find a new comedian.

The “Bury St Edmunds New Act of the Year’, is giving a platform to aspiring local comedians, and is set to take place at the cinema in Hatters Street.

The brainchild of regular compere and host, George S V, this inaugural competition gives new acts a chance to perform and for the winner, the chance to perform on the cinema’s Premier Screen stage with a renowned comedian.

George S V said: “This is a significant step toward growing this comedy club but growing with local acts too.

“I hope every ticket is sold so there’s a platform for local acts to be seen by local people.

“We have a few different plans for 2026, and this is the first. I’m very excited.”

The first heat takes place this coming Sunday, January 25, and is followed by the second heat on Sunday, February 8, with the final on Saturday, February 28.
