A world of music coming to The Apex
Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and Senegalese kora maestro Seckou Keita reunite with Venezuelan percussionist Gustavo Ovalles, (pictured above) to perform as SUBA Trio, playing an Afro-Cuban based mix of jazz and world music, at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, next month.
Keita has arguably become the most influential and inspiring Kora player of his generation, an exceptional and charismatic musician and a modern global citizen, with seven centuries of tradition and heritage expressed through his music.
Seven-time Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Omar Sosa has been exploring African musical cultures and their connections with his Afro-Cuban roots throughout his career, subtly blending traditional and contemporary sounds.
Born from a lockdown reunion, ‘SUBA’ (meaning sunrise) blends the intricate strings of West Africa with the vibrant rhythms of Cuban jazz and Latin percussion.
Omar and Seckou’s SUBA Trio are at The Apex on Tuesday, May 5, at 7.30pm.

Bassekou Kouyate is a legendary musician from Mali, and the undisputed master of the ngoni, a traditional small West African instrument somewhere between a banjo and a lute.
Over the course of his career, Bassekou has played with stars such as Bonnie Raitt, Ali Farka Toure and Bono, and has also won praise from legends like Eric Clapton.
He’s also made a foray into blues and country with Taj Mahal, appeared on line-ups with Africa Express alongside Paul Weller and Damon Albarn, and played festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude and WOMAD.
In this, his latest project, Bassekou performs as a duo with his wife, the revered griot singer and exceptional vocalist Amy Sacko (both pictured above).
After the release of “Djudjon, L’Oiseau de Garana” (2024), their first chart-topping album together as a duo, this will be a unique, intimate and extraordinary opportunity to experience a performance that reaches to the very heart of Mali.
Bassekou Kouyate and Amy Sacko play The Apex on Thursday, May 21, at 7.30pm.
