Man jailed for intentional strangulation of woman

A 31-year-old man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to the intentional strangulation of a woman.

Joseph Cox, (pictured above) formerly from Clare, had also pleaded guilty to the charge of witness intimidation.

He appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday, April 28, where he was sentenced to a total of 36 months’ imprisonment.

He was made subject of a restraining order for 15 years.

Cox had denied the charges of two counts of assault by beating, stalking and criminal damage at an earlier hearing and these were left to lay on file.

PC Aaron Bean, from the West Response Investigation Team, said: “Cox is a manipulative man who attempted to intimidate the victim into withdrawing her complaint against him, and attempted to evade police by travelling out of county.

“Our teams across Suffolk Constabulary remain committed to bringing perpetrators of violence against women and girls to justice, while ensuring victims receive the support they need. I would like to thank the teams involved for their tireless work to secure this outcome.

“I would also like to commend the victim for her bravery in seeking help and for seeing the case to its conclusion.

“I would like to ask for anyone else suffering from violence or abuse to come forward. We have specially trained officers who will listen to you and support you with sensitivity and compassion.”
