Long diversion for traffic on the A14 as work to take place on road between Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds

Work on the A14 is set to take place later this month for up to five weeks with traffic having to take a long detour.

Both sides of the carriageway between junction 38 (Waterhall interchange where the A14 meets the A11) and junction 43 (St Saviours interchange at Bury St Edmunds) will be closed for the duration of the work from Monday, May 18 between 9pm and 5am.

Kevin Wallace, the project manager, Operations East, Scheme Delivery Team, said maintenance work is to take place.

He added: “The work includes resurfacing, refreshing road markings and replacing worn road studs, also known as cat’s eyes. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and more clearly marked road surface.”

The diversion on the A14 eastbound between junctions 38 and 40 (Higham Interchange) will involved traffic staying on the A11 to the London Road / Thetford Bypass roundabout; use the roundabout to turn around and rejoin the A11 southbound; at the end of the Elveden Bypass, leave the A11 and merge onto London Road; turn left onto Elveden Road and continue to the A134; turn right onto the A134 and continue south; at the third roundabout, take the third exit onto Compiegne Way (A134); continue on Compiegne Way to A14 junction 43, St Saviours Interchange; from there, traffic can rejoin the A14 eastbound and continue its journey.

The route on the A14 westbound between junctions 43 and 38 involves traffic to take the third exit from St Saviours Interchange onto Compiegne Way (A134); continue on the A134 through Thetford to the Thetford Bypass / Brandon Road roundabout; at the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A11; continue southbound on the A11 to A14 junction 38, Waterhall Interchange; from there, traffic can rejoin the A14 westbound and continue its journey.
