Six play areas to get revamp ahead of school holidays

Six play areas in West Suffolk are set to receive a fresh, new look over the next few months as part of an ongoing council-funded programme of playground refurbishments.

The six play areas being revamped are at Broomley Green Lane, Bury St Edmunds; Alderton Close, Bramley Road, Cloverfield and Hales Barn Road, Haverhill; and Heathland Way, Mildenhall.

Within the refurbished play areas, the council has looked to make areas more engaging and accessible for users.

The new equipment includes swings, slides and climbing units, along with more creative play.

The council has engaged with pupils from local schools near to these play areas, including nearby St Felix Roman Catholic Primary School, Sebert Wood Community Primary School and Great Heath Academy.

This consultation was invaluable in gathering children’s views of the equipment and proposals.

The contractors undertaking the works are set to begin during June and July, with the aim of opening ahead of the school holidays for children to enjoy.

Ian Shipp, the cabinet member for Leisure at West Suffolk Council, said: “Play areas are vital in supporting our children’s health and wellbeing, so ensuring that they are kept safe, engaging, and fun is important.

“As part of our thriving communities priority, these proposals make sure the areas will be fit for purpose, allowing children to flourish outdoors.

“I’d like to thank everybody for their patience while we get the work done.”

Playground refurbishments include elements of inclusivity within the designs and the council hopes that the designs support creative, fun, adventurous play for all users.
