Train services back to normal after lorry overturns and hits bridge

Train services in and out of Bury St Edmunds were getting back to normal today after a lorry struck a bridge on the outskirts of the town.

The truck hit the structure close to Ottewell Road and Barton Road and toppled onto its side after it was reported that it had to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle.

It resulted in rain services passing through the town facing a series of delays and the road under the bridge being closed.

Greater Anglia reported that the trains between Ipswich and Cambridge and Ipswich and Peterborough were running at reduced speed while Network Rail engineers inspected the bridge.

A spokesman for Greater Anglia said: “Due to a road vehicle striking a railway bridge near Bury St Edmunds, trains are having to run at a reduced speed in the area to ensure the safety of the railway.

“Network Rail engineers are en route to the site and will need to inspect and pass the bridge fit for service before trains can run over it at full speed again.”
