A new mobile bar service is to open outside The Apex in Bury St Edmunds from tomorrow (Friday, July 31).

West Suffolk Council, which runs the venue, brought its catering contract back in-house in January and has been focusing on working with local suppliers, supporting West Suffolk based jobs and businesses.

Bury St Edmunds pub company and brewer, Greene King, has supplied the new outdoor mobile bar, offering the chance for shoppers and visitors to sit outside The Apex and enjoy a drink from its range of beers brewed in the town as well as an alcohol-free option, Estrella Galicia 0 per cent.

The mobile bar will open on Friday from noon to 6pm. It will then be open through to the end of August on Thursdays to Sundays from noon to 6pm. It will also open on Monday, August 31, Bank Holiday, to support the two-day food and drink festival organised by Our Bury St Edmunds.

The bar will also be serving Greene King’s latest addition to its portfolio, Pilfer, a 4pc fruit lager infused with juicy peach.

The inspiration for the lager relates to the Rose Garden, in Bury St Edmunds, once part of the Monastery’s orchard, where local legend tells of townspeople scaling the orchard walls under the cover of darkness to help themselves to the monks’ finest fruit, of which peaches were the most prized.

Greene King has a long history in Bury St Edmunds, which is set to continue with the opening of its new £40 million brewery next year at Suffolk Business Park, where it also has a distribution centre.

Cliff Waterman, the leader of West Suffolk Council said: “West Suffolk Council made the decision to bring catering at The Apex back in-house in January and we are already working with local businesses for our cakes, scones, sausage rolls and many of our other snacks and supplies.

“We are working closely with Greene King, which continues to play an important role in our community, and we are thankful for its support in launching this new mobile bar.

“It means people can stop off to relax with a choice of hot or soft drinks from the Apex Coffee House or with a beer, including non-alcoholic options, from the new mobile bar, before carrying on shopping in the town.”

Matt Starbuck, the managing director for Greene King’s Brewing and Brands and Group Supply Chain, said: “Bury St Edmunds is a vibrant town with a strong sense of community, and we’re honoured that Greene King is part of that.

“We’re pleased to be working with West Suffolk Council at The Apex on this new mobile bar, helping to create a space for people to pause, enjoy a drink that’s brewed locally, and make the most of what the town has to offer over the summer months.”

The Apex Coffee House is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
