Autumn features an array of artists at The Apex
From “the best guitarist in the world” to “one of the finest combos in the country”, The Apex is set to bring internationally acclaimed musicians to Bury St Edmunds this autumn.
Virtuoso fingerstyle jazz guitarist Martin Taylor returns on October 6, celebrating the golden age of jazz through fresh arrangements of classic tunes from the Great American Songbook.
The multi-award-winner has been described by Jeff Beck as “the best guitarist in the world” and by Pat Metheny as “one of the most awesome solo guitar players in history.”
On October 115, Budapest Café Orchestra (pictured above) deliver a show evoking Tzigane fiddle maestros and Eastern European Gypsy campfires.
This celebrated jazz ensemble features accordion champion Eddie Hession and violinist Christian Garrick, who, between them, have played with Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Dame Cleo Laine and Nigel Kennedy.
The LP Swing Orchestra presents “Luck Be A Lady” on October 18.
The dynamic 16-piece orchestra, with guest vocalists, will play classics from Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland, alongside iconic Big Band favourites and hidden gems from some of the era’s more unsung voices.
Founding member of Level 42, Mike Lindup is a cornerstone of Brit funk and jazz.
On October 19, he’ll perform in a classic jazz trio format, with Yolanda Charles MBE on bass – recognised for her work with Hans Zimmer, Paul Weller, and B.B. King – and John Sam on drums.
Internationally renowned kora master Suntou Susso joins forces with the Gambian Superstars for their debut UK tour, calling in at The Apex on November 1.
Rooted in a 700-year-old griot tradition, the eight-piece ensemble weave kora, balafon, percussion, drums, bass, keyboards and saxophone into an exhilarating Afro-Manding sound infused with funk and jazz.
El Pony Pisador (November 3) are a lively and unique band from Barcelona. Their mix of folk sounds from all over the world (from Catalan songs and dances to Celtic and Mediterranean tunes, yodelling and Tuvan throat singing) results in a fun and energetic sound that’s unpredictable and full of personality.
Liza Pulman, of Fascinating Aida fame, celebrates the music of Barbra Streisand in “Liza Sings Streisand” on November 9.
One of the few artists that can truly emulate the vocal skills of the iconic Barbra Streisand, Liza’s show is a celebration of the legendary performer’s life and music, told with warmth and humour.
Described in Jazz Journal as “one of the finest combos in the country”, the Chris Ingham Quintet featuring Joanna Eden (aka Jazz At The Movies) returns to The Apex with “A Swinging Christmas” on December 15, for their ever-evolving festive tradition of 20th century holiday classics and curiosities.
