Norwegian pianist and composer Tord Gustavsen (pictured above) is due to return to the Apex with his trio later this month.
The venue’s programmer Nick Wells explained why Tord is now a regular visitor to Bury St Edmunds saying: “I just love Tord Gustavsen’s music. When he brought his beautiful and graceful music to Bury for the opening night of the Bury Festival in 2007 it was wonderful, and for many people it was their most enjoyable gig of the festival that year.”
The Scandinavian musician has released eight critically acclaimed albums with his trio and extended ensemble.
Before starting his solo career, Tord had already been an important part of the Norwegian jazz scene for several years. His music continues to evolve, with memorable melodies, subtle grooves and musical space with gentleness and depth.
This spring saw the release of his ninth album which combines his mesmeric original compositions with hymns.
Playing music from this new album, alongside material from previous releases, Tord is joined by his regular drummer Jarle Vespestad and new bassist Steinar Raknes, who add strong musical foundations and virtuous solo playing, taking the trio to yet another level. Sound design by Louise Lavoll adds subtle electronics and sound textures.
The Tord Gustavsen Trio play the Apex on Friday, May 20, at 7.30pm. Contact the Apex box office on 01284 758000 or visitwww.theapex.co.uk for more information or to book.
