Town’s relegation likely to be confirmed on Saturday with visit to high flying Newcastle United
It was always going to be a tough ask.
And it was made even tougher with the sending off of Leif Davis in the first half.
Two down already and with Arsenal absolutely dominating Ipswich Town you feared the worst.
Two more goals came along in the second period and to be honest there could, and should, have been more from the Gunners.
But 4-0 to the Londoners it ended with their goals coming via two from Leandro Trossard in the 14th and 69th minute, Gabriel Martinelli (28) and substitute Ethan Nwaneri (88).
It made it Town’s seventh home defeat of 2025, which leaves them clinging on to their Premier League status for one more week with Newcastle to come in the North East on Saturday.
But it’s been a wonderful experience for the fans to see top class football back at Portman Road after too long a wait despite only having clinched just one win all season … so far.
But we have Brentford and West Ham to come next month and they will definitely be winnable games for the Tractor Boys sandwiched in between away fixtures against already relegated Leicester City and Everton, who will be hosting their penultimate fixture at Goodison.
Ipswich were never really in this match – and it sums up their struggles that they have now lost 20 of 33 Premier League games this season.
Manager Kieran McKenna admitted in his matchday programme notes that his side were unlikely to achieve their aim of staying up. Defeat rendered their survival mission all but mathematically impossible.
The squad has been decimated by injuries and what it will look like next season is anybody’s guess.
Will dynamic striker Liam Delap move on or will he stay to help Town”s bid to return to the Premier League, that’s the number one question on the lips of Town fans.
So many questions to ponder but all will become clear in a few months time.
