Railway bridge repair work set to close A14

Work is set to take place on the Higham railway bridge near Kentford next month which will result in the closure of the busy A14.

National Highways will be carrying out the emergency repair work over three consecutive weekends, beginning Saturday, July 5, and finishing by Sunday, July 27.

All work will take place overnight between 8.30pm and 9am weather permitting. 

The planned weekend dates are Saturday to Sunday, July 5 to 6; Saturday to Sunday, July 19 to 20; and Saturday to Sunday, July 26 to 27.

The A14 eastbound between junctions 38 and 43, (Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds) will be closed and traffic will be diverted as follows:

  • Exit the A14 at Junction 38 onto the A11 northbound;
  • Continue on the A11 to the London Road roundabout;
  • At the roundabout, turn around to head southbound on the A11;
  • Join London Road from the A11 southbound;
  • Turn left onto Elveden Road to connect with the A134;
  • Continue south on the A134 to reach Junction 43;
  • Rejoin the A14 eastbound at Junction 43 to continue your journey
