Police conduct operation on commercial vehicles

Suffolk Constabulary’s Commercial Vehicle Unit (CVU) has conducted an operation with officers from Immigration Enforcement to carry out checks on drivers of commercial vehicles used within the gig economy, such as food delivery services.

The operation took place on Saturday, August 9, and saw patrols conducted in Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket with a total of 34 vans, cars, mopeds and pedal cycles stopped and checked.

One driver was arrested on suspicion of breaching Section 24 Immigration act 1971 (working whilst disqualified to do so).

The driver was working as a food delivery driver. He will be removed from the UK immediately.

A second driver was found to have an outstanding asylum appeal.

The driver’s information was recorded for further enquiries pending the appeal process.

In addition, other matters dealt with were as follows:

  • Two drivers were reported for no insurance;
  • A driver reported for no VEL (tax);
  • Two drivers reported for not wearing a seatbelt;
  • Several drivers were advised for contravening the pedestrian zone on St Andrews Street in Bury St Edmunds; and
  • A driver reported for displaying incorrect number plates and a noisy exhaust.
