Soul funk band, The Milk to play The Apex

Emerging from a bunch of sleepy commuter towns in Essex and a school that banned music, four childhood friends with a love of soul decided to form a band.

Before long, The Milk (pictured above) had crafted a sound that evolved from energy-fuelled 1960s soul to impeccable instrumentation and they are due to show off their talents at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, next month.

Today, they blend the raw emotions of their early soul sound with sophisticated grooves of modern funk and jazz.

 Their debut album in 2012, “Tales from the Thames Delta” catapulted them into the spotlight, secured a place in the UK Top 40 and earned them Apple iTunes “Band of the Year”. 

Filled with lush arrangements that emphasise melody and harmony, the band’s next two albums were made BBC 6 Music’s “Album of the Year” by Huey Morgan.

With sweeping horns and strings, their fourth studio album “Borderlands” is vintage in spirit but contemporary in message, crafted in the wake of a series of personal and public upheavals – from the joys of marriages and births to the sorrows of funerals and the societal shifts brought by Brexit and the pandemic.

Delivering soul-stirring melodies and sharp, sophisticated rhythms that fans have come to love, The Milk have secured their place as pioneers of a new era of cinematic soul.

Over the years, The Milk has graced some of the most prestigious stages and festivals, including Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight Festival.

Frontman Rick Nunn’s vocal prowess is often compared to the legendary Steve Winwood, his voice embodies the soulful spirit of the greats like Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers, bringing a heartfelt authenticity to each lyric.
