Town held to frustrating 1-1 draw against Watford

Sometimes you don’t always get what you deserve.

And that could be true of Ipswich Town last night.

They dominated a game they should have easily won but missed gilt edged chances to end up with a 1-1 draw with Watford who frustrated the Tractor Boys throughout.

Town had a total of 16 shots at goal with four on target compared to the visitors stats of four shots with two on goal.

Substitutes Ivan Azon and Marcelino Nunez missed great chances to score while the Hornets shot stopper Egil Selvik made a wonder save to deny Azon late in the second half.

So it was a frustrating night for manager Kieran McKenna, his squad and the majority of the 27,184 fans watching on.

It was definitely a case of thee points being dropped but in the general scheme of things they avoided a second home defeat of the season.

Watford’s captain Imran Louza scored in the 16th minute, the fourth time in as many games, before Jaden Philogene’s emphatic finish levelled matters, his sixth goal of the campaign.

Ipswich created more opportunities but the visitors – who remain without an away win in the Championship this season – held on for a point.

Speaking after the game to the Town website McKenna said his team did enough to “have won it.”

He said: “There were positives and negatives in the performance, more positives than negatives.

“Negatives is that we have conceded a poor goal really with not that much defending deep to do and we have lost a challenge and not reacted well enough in the box and given a goal away too easily.

“The reaction to that was excellent, showed learning from the last home game here, didn’t let the game get away from us, went straight back to our football and scored a good goal from it, so we get to half time in a good place.

“And I thought second half, in terms of trying to chase the winner, I thought we done most of the right things to be honest.

“We pinned them in for spells apart from maybe a 10 minute spell, but for most of the half we’ve pinned them in, we’ve worked the ball to good crossing areas, we’ve got good crosses into the box, we’ve had a couple of big chances inside the six yard box, we were inches away from the rebounds, we’ve had set plays and had some opportunities from them and I think we didn’t give away too many counter attacks which is important.

“So in terms of chasing the goal in the second half we done more good things than not and done enough to feel that we should have won it.”
